Wheel and Axle Lesson 2- Langauge Arts
Wheels and Axles in Exercise
From my previous lesson I was able to tell that the students understood the difference between balls and wheels, and could identify some of the characteristics and properties of wheels and axles. Because of this I felt it was appropriate to move on to the next topic, which was how we use wheels and axles to stay healthy and .
In my lesson, Wheels and Axles in Exercise, the students were able to list ways that wheels and axles are used outside of our body to help us exercise. We discussed equipment such as bicycles, scooters, skateboards, and more. The students were then able to expand on this understanding by relating it to real-life experiences by engaging in exercises with wheels and axles by riding bicycles. After we discussed how there are wheels and axles in our body that help us exercise. We then rotated our arms around our shoulder and talked about how this movement can be considered a wheel and axle and how people use this movement to throw or hit balls. We also connected this to real-life experience by throwing balls to each other.
The students did a great job listening and coming up with their own insights. One student was able to expand on this notion and said “our legs can be wheels and axles too if we move like this” as he continued to rotate his leg in a circle rotating around the hip joint. Here are some other great quotes from the students from the lesson:

Here are some other great quotes from the students from the lesson:
"We need to exercise if you want to be big and strong and have muscles."
"Wheels make the bike move." "If you turn the bike the wheels turn too!" "Healthy food is important too!" |
"You can ride the bike both ways (riding the bike forwards and backwards), so wheels can go in both directions!"
"How come some bikes have only two wheels and other ones have three?" "Exercise is healthy and riding a bike or throwing a football is exercising. So this is healthy!" |
I feel that now my students have a through understanding of wheels and axles, their characteristics/properties, and can give examples of them. The students can also list way wheels and axles help us with exercise and the importance of keeping healthy. To view the full assessment of this lesson click here.
